The work ahead

We are now up in May 2011 and the nature resumed her rights. In the mild spring this month, the gardeners would be well advised to get active! Indeed, it is a time for great work!

Let’s start with the vegetable garden. Now is the time to plant tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, zucchini and melons, but butter beans and potatoes.

Side of the orchard, the young apple, pear and cherry trees are very susceptible to damage by pests. Better to spray a fungicide, then again when the buds have bloomed.

In the garden, we arrive at the final date for planting the bulb plants that will flower in summer or autumn.

It’s also time to plant begonias, geraniums and flowers that bloom every year in summer as nasturtiums, cosmos, and sunflowers. Think well before planting, to establish a thin layer of potting mix and compost.

Prune lilacs, forsythia and roses dispose of their spent flowers. If some of your flowers may collapse under their weight (such as peonies or dahlias), please install guardians. It is also time to cut the flower stems of irises, daffodils and tulips.

Regarding indoor plants, orchids should be watered thoroughly, Clerodendrum, Anthuriums and bougainvillea.

Finally, add fertilizer every two weeks for your garden, Guzmania, Bougainvillea and Hibiscus.
